As we observe Mental Health Awareness Month this May, it's a reminder that supporting the emotional well-being of our girls is essential to helping them grow into confident, resilient leaders.
In today’s fast-paced, often overwhelming world, many girls are facing emotional challenges at younger ages. Recent studies reveal that nearly 70 percent of girls ages five through 13 are experiencing loneliness—a significant factor that can affect their mental health. Academic pressures and complex social dynamics also contribute to these stressors. This underscores the importance of equipping our Girl Scouts with the tools and support they need to navigate these challenges.
By raising awareness and prioritizing mental health, we strengthen our dedication to helping girls thrive. Through open conversations, access to resources, and cultivating a culture of empathy and understanding, we can ensure every Girl Scout feels seen, supported, and empowered. Promoting emotional wellness is not just part of our mission, it is vital to building strong, courageous young women.
The power of girls’ leadership was on full display this past weekend at our Highest Awards Ceremony, where we proudly celebrated the remarkable accomplishments of 74 Silver Awardees, 29 GSHCC Rose Awardees, and 38 Gold Award Girl Scouts. Each of these remarkable individuals embodies what it means to lead with purpose, compassion, and vision.
We’re especially proud that so many of our Gold Award Girl Scouts chose to focus on mental health in their projects. In fact, 26% of this year’s Gold Award projects addressed mental health challenges, reflecting a deep commitment to fostering understanding and support. These young leaders collectively dedicated more than 800 hours of service, raising awareness, reducing stigma, and making a meaningful impact in their communities.
The Gold Award represents the pinnacle of achievement in Girl Scouting. It is a testament to the power of commitment, resilience, and the unwavering drive to make a difference. We are incredibly proud of our Gold Award Girl Scouts and their efforts to raise awareness and create a lasting impact on mental health.
