Motor Vehicle Check for Volunteers
|
|
The safety of our membership is of critical importance to Girl Scouting. Sadly, auto accidents are a leading cause of serious injuries and fatalities of children in the United States. In partnership with our insurance vendor’s requirements, GSCSA is requiring successful motor vehicle checks (also called driver’s license checks) for drivers of non-family member girls while they are engaging in Girl Scout activities. This will be a three-year transition as current volunteers come up for background check renewal.
|
-
The insurance vendor requires drivers to have at least 5 years of driving experience, so volunteers under 21 are not permitted to drive girls.
-
All new volunteers will have a background check followed by a motor vehicle check; the first check is for criminal record, and the second is for validity of driver’s license and recent driving history.
-
When a current volunteer’s criminal background check expires, they will have a new criminal background check and then the motor vehicle check. These come as separate emails from Asurint, GSCSA’s background check vendor. The two emails seem similar, but they are requesting checks of two different records.
-
Volunteers who are driving girls on overnight trips must have completed a successful motor vehicle check. We will process motor vehicle checks as needed upon notification through the Activity Approval Forms.
|
Additional information:
|
|
-
Volunteers can choose not to have a motor vehicle check if they are not going to drive girls. They will be restricted from driving as part of Girl Scouting.
-
Every volunteer who drives girls is responsible for having the appropriate car insurance on personal and rental vehicles.
-
GSCSA is required to follow the Fair Credit Report Act on all checks through our background vendor. If a driving record cannot be covered by the Council’s liability insurance, a pre-adverse letter and final letter of “adverse action” will be sent to the volunteer. For a motor vehicle check that does not meet requirements (e.g., current license and moving violations/accident record), the person is not eligible to drive; however, the person may still be eligible to volunteer, depending on criminal background check.

Each fall, our council hosts a Trefoil Society Luncheon in each of our regions to honor a woman who exemplifies the spirit of Girl Scouting. These luncheons are a chance for our donors, community leaders, members, and alums to get together and celebrate Girl Scouting while also raising funds for its future.

Be Seen in Your Community
|
|
Troop 945 out of Surgoinsville, Tennessee, worked hard and quickly to collect donations for victims of Hurricane Helene. They collected over fifteen bags of animal food, forty-plus boxes of gloves, three boxes full of non-perishable food items, and several cases of water. Their troop leaders and families are really proud of their initiative and drive to help the community.
Please share your stories and photos with us at socialmedia@girlscoutcsa.org! Please include a brief description (including date/location) of the event and/or project depicted, as well as the troop number(s).
