Keeping Activities Safe for Our Girl Scouts
|
|
As we head into February with cookie booths, GSCSA would like to remind everyone about Girl Scouting’s Safety Activity Checkpoints (SACP). The updated 2022-2023 version was announced in October's Volunteer News email. The national organization revises the SACP each year and releases them to Councils for review and updating. The Safety Activity Checkpoints are available on our website.
The document is long, so we suggest making sure you become familiar with the opening sections with general guidance and then review individual sections before and as you plan specific activities with the girls.
One question that comes up is overnights with Daisies and Brownies. Daisies may go on one-night troop/service unit trips under the guidelines. GSCSA allows a two-night trip if the child is accompanied by parent or legal guardian. These trips must be within GSCSA’s geography. Brownies may do 2-night troop/service unit trips within GSCSA’s territory without a parent or legal guardian. Girl Scouting’s travel guidelines encourage a progression of time and distance away from home as girls get older and are more ready for travel experiences with other girls of a similar age.
We also sometimes get asked about meetings or overnights at residences. GSCSA has guidelines in place that allow for backyard camping or learning outdoor skills at the homes of registered volunteers. However, homes in general do not meet the requirements for accessibility and exit signs that have been in Girl Scouting’s meeting requirements for over 20 years. Our national insurance vendor views potential risks to girls as greater in personal homes where there are possibilities of medicines, alcohol, firearms, pets, and private spaces that might lead to accusations—founded or not. Any of these risks could put the homeowner and family, the Council and, most importantly, the girl at risk.
If you have questions about Safety Activity Checkpoints, please reach out the HR team at info@girlscoutcsa.org.

Environmental problems become exacerbated by human conflict, like war or invasions. In turn, many conflicts have arisen as a direct result of environmental crises—water scarcity, for example. There is a clear link between the environment, peace, and security.
That’s why the 2023 World Thinking Day theme is: “Our world, our peaceful future: The environment, peace, and security.”
This World Thinking Day, join us as we explore the different ways we can tackle environmental issues and thus help prevent and reduce conflict to build lasting peace worldwide.

Be Seen in Your Community

Girls in troop 22146 have a heart for helping others, and after some discussions about helping families in need, they settled on helping a pantry in a way that benefits other kids - birthday kits. The girls working toward their Bronze Award received help and support from other girls in the troop - knowing the importance of their project and benefit to the community.
Troop volunteers leveraged their community network to connect girls to potential partners. For the project, the girls partnered with CedarBrook Outreach to receive and distribute the birthday kits and Mayfield Dairy, who generously provided coupons for ice cream (because you can't have a birthday cake without ice cream!).
With support from family, friends, and community members, the girls donated 45 birthday kits to CedarBrook. Each birthday kit included a cake mix, foil pan, frosting, candles, an ice cream coupon, a birthday banner, and a hat in a reusable tote. The reusable tote served as the container for the birthday items and can be used for additional pantry items.
Share your stories and photos with us at socialmedia@girlscoutcsa.org. Please include a brief description (including date/location) of the event and/or project depicted, as well as the troop number(s).
