Dear GSHCC Volunteer,
Earlier this year, I read a troubling article by professors Elizabeth Englander and Meghan McCoy about the recent CDC report on adolescent mental health. The article, “There’s a mental health crisis among teen girls. Here are some ways to support them,” certainly got my attention. The CDC report laid out what they called a perfect storm in terms of what was happening with girls:

The pandemic disproportionately affected girls. For example—70% of girls said they missed seeing people; 28% of boys reported that sentiment.

Though social media can be a source of support, we also know it can deliver crushing blows to the self-esteem and psychological well-being of girls.

Finally, young girls are struggling with the political and social unrest in our country.

The report called for urgency to invest in programs that are a lifeline to help struggling youth. For many girls, Girl Scouts is that lifeline.
Our purpose is to provide a safe and supportive environment for girls that includes adult mentors like you and a sisterhood of girls’ peers. Girl Scouts is a place where girls can openly struggle with who they are. A place where they can safely take risks without ridicule. Girls of all ages can benefit from our research-based program and receive one more tool to address mental health challenges.
We are not the only ones who see the benefits of Girl Scouts. There are so many ways our community shows up and invests in our girls. Just last month, nearly 200 Girl Scout supporters came together for our annual fundraising event, Gather and Give for Girl Scouts. Through their generosity, these community members showed us they are equally as passionate about investing in the lives of local Girl Scouts as you and I are.
What makes this even more meaningful is that their contributions that night will help even more girls participate in Girl Scouting regardless of their socio-economic status.
Girls need the Girl Scout program now more than ever. While we embark on another year of Girl Scouting together, I want to thank you for the incredible impact you will have on the lives of girls. Whether you are leading a troop, leading a Service Unit or helping out with an event or program, your volunteer investment brings Girl Scouting to life!
Girl Scout volunteers are the driving force behind the incredible experiences our Girl Scouts enjoy, and your commitment truly shapes the unforgettable adventures that lie ahead of them.
Thank you for being a guiding light for our Girl Scouts. I rest easier knowing YOU are supporting and helping our girls address the challenges they face.
