Greetings GSHCC Volunteers,
Today, we celebrate National STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) Day and the opportunities for Girl Scouts as they immerse themselves in all STEM has to offer. Despite progress, women remain significantly underrepresented in STEM fields; in 2021, only about one-third (35%) of those employed in STEM occupations were women, according to the National Science Foundation.
To help bridge this gap, Girl Scouts launched a STEM Pledge in 2017, aiming to add 2.5 million girls to the STEM pipeline by 2025. Since then, 40 new STEM badges, including cybersecurity and space science, have empowered girls to pursue STEM paths.
At GSHCC, we support this mission through our STEM + MakerSpaces in Sacramento and Modesto, along with our Mobile STEM + MakerSpace, immersing girls in the excitement of scientific discovery and creating pathways to limitless opportunities. This commitment is making a measurable difference—Girl Scouts are nearly twice as likely to engage in STEM as non-Girl Scouts, with 77% reporting that their time in Girl Scouts has inspired them to consider careers in technology.
Girl Scout STEM programs offer girls numerous benefits, including gaining confidence in their skills and abilities, developing a strong interest in STEM subjects, and learning to think scientifically to solve problems. They also come to understand the relevance of STEM in society, inspiring them to continue exploring and engaging in STEM fields.

The monthly Volunteer Enrichment STEM Series at the Sacramento and Modesto STEM Centers helps troop leaders build skills and confidence in leading STEM activities. Each session focuses on a specific topic and grade level, with hands-on activities, take-home resources, and adaptation tips. Adult members can sign up on the MYGS activities page.

Our STEM centers are open for troop use, with reservations available on the GSHCC website. The Modesto STEM+Makerspace is available from 3:00-8:00 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and all day on Saturdays. The Sacramento STEM Center+Makerspace is open from 3:00-8:00 pm on Mondays and Wednesdays, and all day on Sundays.

Watch for our Mobile STEM Center + Makerspace as it travels across our 18 counties, bringing STEM learning to our Girl Scouts After-School Clubs. Girls can engage in activities like building robots, 3-D pen design, coding, and more. The Mobile STEM Center is also available for service unit and community events, bringing fun, accessible STEM experiences to all.
